Hi, I’m Rachel, a writer, editor, and production manager with twenty years of publishing experience. I’ve collaborated with an international array of respected clients, applying my skills to the art of fine-tuning copy. After graduating from University of Virginia with a degree in both English and art history, I spent the early part of my career in New York, working for publishers such as Elsevier, Penguin Random House, and Verso Books. This was followed by a decade in Europe working with Gestalten in Berlin and Monocle in the UK, primarily on art, design, and travel books, while returning to the US at intervals to freelance for clients such as Apple.
I know the ins and outs of overseeing the production process from acquisition to publication, in the realms of both print and digital. I can seamlessly navigate between US or UK style, and enjoy finessing an English text to illuminate a foreign author’s creative concepts. Whether producing an e-book by Jay-Z, proofreading Rebecca Solnit, line editing ad campaigns for Carhartt WIP, or copyediting collectible publications for Patagonia, the common thread is ensuring the integrity and readability of the words I help shape.
When I’m not writing jacket copy or looking for misplaced commas, I’m climbing in Yosemite National Park or on Kalymnos, Greece; hiking through Slovenia; or taking a page from one of the books I’ve edited by living and working out of my van in the Pacific Northwest.
